How To Encourage Yourself – Encouragement Tips For Difficult Times

bumble beeSometimes things can be challenging. Yet it’s so important not to let it get to you because, as Abraham says, like draws like, and the more discouraged you might be, the more you get reason to be discouraged.

I find this is all too true, and that’s why I’ve made it my mission to gather and literally collect strategies for encouragement. From encouragement quotes, of which I have many, to techniques and other stress reducing and feel-good tips, I have a repository of “encourage yourself” or should I say “encourage myself” techniques that I draw from constantly.

I used to think, I’ll wait until things get better before I feel better, but that’s just not how it works. It’s important to feel better first. To find encouragement in yourself. To protect it from the nay-sayers in your world.

It can be hard. So why don’t you join me in my mission to bring more words of encouragement into our world.

Words of Encouragement & Encouragement Quotes

Here’s a famous encouragement quote by Richard Bach:

“What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the master calls a butterfly.”
– Richard Bach

Then, there are those quotes of encouragement that point out that it is our attitude that makes all the difference.

“Aerodynamically, the bumble bee shouldn’t be able to fly, but the bumble bee doesn’t know it so it goes on flying anyway.”
– Mary Kay Ash

I love that one! It always makes me smile. That’s why I picked the image at the top of this post.

And here’s another encouragement quote that focuses on perspective and keeping ones eyes open:

“When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.”
– Alexander Graham Bell

Plus a long-time favorite among the encouragement quotes I have collected over the years – this one by Winston Churchill:

“If you’re going through hell, keep going.”
– Winston Churchill

You’ll be surprised how quickly you may come out on the other side if you just keep up your spirits.

A Story about coming out on the other side

In fact, that reminds me of a horrible tropical storm I got caught up in a long time ago. I thought my car was going to float away on the freeway. I could barely see where I was going. I was afraid to stop, lest I get run over by some trucks that didn’t see me. And I was scared to death about going on.

But I figured I would just keep going, slowly, a few yards at a time, a mile at a time, hoping that maybe there’d be some sort of rest stop or something. No rest stop appeared, but suddenly, after an hour or so, the rain stopped. I had come out on the other side. Woo-hoo!

And I looked back, and it was practically black behind me. So I kept going to make sure it wouldn’t catch up with me again.

Encourage yourself with a new perspective

Finally, here’s another cool one:

“Problems are only opportunities with thorns on them.”
– Hugh Miller

It’s all in how you look at them.

I have a friend, Michael, who has the most wonderful metaphors and sayings. He calls problems and challenges “growth opportunities” and says we should be thankful for them.

And that makes me laugh! Thank you for the growth opportunities!

And suddenly the focus isn’t any longer on the problem but on the challenge and how to get through it, and what will be on the other side.

I’m goimg to write more on encouragement in the next few days and weeks. It’s like a new series 😉

Meanwhile, remember that even behind the darkest cloud, there’s the sun!

Here are a couple of things I like to help me keep up the courage: encouraging quotes mugs and jewelry. You can find some examples on my Squidoo pages on inspirational quotes coffee mugs and on inspirational quotes jewelry.

I can’t quite remember who said that one first, but it’s also a German saying, and I have a cute little image that i might include in one of my upcoming posts.

Wishing you much encouragement and success!

Elisabeth

Inspirational Quotes for Encouragement

Life can be a challenge. Yet if we view those challenges as stepping stones to where we want to go, they actually contribute to our growth. On the other hand, if we let them discourage us, we lose out. Read on for seven short inspirational quotes that will help you put things in perspective when the going gets tough.

“Eighty percent of success is showing up.”

– Woody Allen

Doesn’t that take off the pressure? Sometimes just being in the right place at the right time is all it takes. If you’re feeling a sudden impulse to go somewhere, go.

Many years ago, I once won a medal in a karate sparring competition — because I showed up. Unlike some of my competitors, who chickened out at the last minute. I stepped forward, got beaten up in the one fight I did end up fighting, and yet I ended up with a medal! I didn’t get into sports until college, so this was the only sports medal I ever acquired and felt like an amazing achievement. Me, the anti-jock, won a medal in karate! And I still have that medal to this day.

So even if things don’t work quite the way you have hoped for, take heart. Edison said that that he found 999 ways the light bulb did NOT work. Or something along those lines. What a great positive spin on having tried something a thousand times until it finally worked.

But if you’re still feeling discouraged, consider this:

“It is wise to keep in mind that neither success nor failure is ever final.”

— Roger Babson

Indeed. And Robert Frost has found an even cooler way to put it:

“In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life. It goes on.”

— Robert Frost

It does indeed. And every day we get another chance to make a new start. In fact, every moment, but it does seem to work better after a good night’s sleep.

And if anyone ever picks on you for your perceived lack of success, remember what Bill Cosby had to say about that one:

“I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.”

— Bill Cosby

Another one of my favorites, Albert Einstein, found another way to put it in perspective:

“Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.”

– Albert Einstein

One of my favorites is on a coffee mug I acquired while I went through breast cancer treatments — and it really helped me gain perspective:

“Don’t take life too seriously. It’s not permanent.”

— On a coffee mug by Oz

And so, instead of focusing too hard on what everybody else wants us to do, or achieving success at any price, why not go with Joseph Campbell and follow our bliss:

“Follow your bliss and don’t be afraid, and doors will open where you didn’t know they were going to be.”

— Joseph Campbell

I always try to remember that one whenever I’m tempted to get discouraged. And keep looking for the doors, which keep turning up in the most surprising places.
