Happy Birthday, Gratitude & Summer

Happy Birthday CakeIt’s my birthday: Happy Birthday to meeeee!

And Happy Birthday to You too, if yours falls into mid-July and smack into the middle of summer. I hope you have a great one!

Summer birthdays can come with some pros and cons. I loved the fact that I never had to go to school on my birthday! And my friends were happy to come to my party (if they were in town) – so I got lots of presents anyway 😉

I didn’t really discover the disadvantages until I was in Berkeley, and people would celebrate everyone’s birthday just as long as it fell in the middle of the semester. But they were gone for summer, so I never got those surprise parties 🙁

I had to arrange them myself – but then I also got to choose what I wanted to do. I still fondly remember

my 30th birthday party! And I still have a couple of those 30th birthday mugs I got then.

To think that even back then I had to be contrarian to counteract all that “over the hill” babble on 30th birthday cards! Sheesh! I was a spring chicken then!

Still Excited About My Birthdays

And now, it’s quite a while later, and I still get excited about every single birthday, looking forward to lots and lots of them!

It’s almost like New Year’s, which I love too. And since my birthday falls smack in the middle of the year, I really get to do a “restart” twice a year. Complete with new projections and plans and resolutions of sorts.

As you can see, I love my birthday, and in fact, I’ve been celebrating it all week already.

Birthdays and Gratitude

Average C-CupEvery birthday, I’m thankful for having had another year, and look forward to the next one. That sounds a bit weird to you, maybe, but when I had breast cancer 19 years ago, I didn’t think I’d make it this long. Or half as long. I thought I’d be grateful to get another year. Or five. And now, here I am, 19 years later! Yay! Time to write another poem.

Back then, I resolved I’d be grateful for every year, heck, every day even, though I have to admit I’m slacking off on occasion). But when I remember to feel and express my gratitude for everything in my life, my life has more things to be grateful fo.

No, I’m not cynical. I mean it. And everything I’ve been learning about the Law of Attraction is proving that this is the right approach. In fact, did you know that you cannot be grateful and unhappy at the same time? So if you make an effort to be grateful, you feel happier too.

As do I.

Birthday Reflections

So what do I do on my birthday, other than celebrate in whatever way pleases me most?

I reflect. About what the last year has brought, especially about things that I’m grateful for (see above). About where I want to go during the next year. What I want to focus on, and so on. Not that things always go according to plan.

I think it was John Lennon who said that life is what happens when you’re off making other plans. Well, he had it right, for sure.

Assembling My Birthday Special

And now, a bit belatedly, I’m putting together my Happy Birthday Special Crazy Deal. I finally figured out what to do for it…
