I was just rereading my last blog post and the comments and found myself caught up in pondering the bit where I talk about resistance.

And that reminded me of “allowing.”

I remember the first time I was told I should just “allow.”

Uhm, what do you mean, I would ask, and none of the answers were very helpful.

That was at a time when I was learning to do Quantum Touch Energy Healing, and allowing was key to making it work.

I still could get it to work, but the more I focused on “willing” it to work, the less it did.

Fast forward a few years…

I discovered Abraham, and I finally “got” allowing.

Abraham’s explanation was pretty good. But I REALLY got it when I read Erin Pavlina’s definition of allowing.

She wrote that it was much like in a restaurant, or if you ordered pizza or something (don’t remember the exact example though maybe it was both).

Once you call them and order the pizza, you basically stop thinking about it until it arrives. You don’t call back and inquire about the progress of your pizza. You don’t think frantically about what would happen if the pizza won’t show up.

You don’t focus on the pizza, draw images of the pizza, and otherwise obsess about the pizza. You just let it go and allow it to arrive in due time.

And of course, it does.

And it’s much the same with most everything else.

Now, when I do Quantum Touch, I no longer even think much of the outcome. I just focus on the breathing and whatever technique or meditation I’m using, and don’t even think about whether it will work or not.

Interestingly, it works much better now.

And so, when I’m hoping for a certain outcome that I don’t have control over, I do my thing and then I meditate and visualize what I want, but without giving it a whole lot of attention. Just a bit of joyous anticipation.

And maybe some gratitude.

I think that’s the secret.

The language is interesting though… If we obsess about something, we don’t think we are resisting it, even though we are. Because when we obsess, the underlying feeling is fear that we can’t have it. And negative expectations are… resistance.

While relaxed positive expectations — and even none at all — are allowing.

Do you ever wish you could manifest your desires NOW? What if you’re in a jam and you need it yesterday?

Have you also noticed that it just doesn’t work?

There is a reason for that…

When you’re in a jam, your energy exudes “emergency” and “need” and unfortunately, the law of attraction will only sendyou more of that.

When you’re worried about something, you’ll attract more of what you’re worried about.

So what can you do?

It’s a catch 22. You need to find a way to feel better before things caqn better. And it’s a huge challenge. After all, it feels very counterintuitive.

I remember years back when I first was told that I had to be happy with where I was before I could get what I really wanted. I thought that was absurd. I was pretty ticked off at the “messenger” who told me that.

The thing is, he was right.

So what should you do?

Here are a few tips:

1) Breathe

2) Take a break or do something you enjoy. A walk, a bath, a cup of coffee, music, and so on.

3) Work with Abraham’s emotional scale (see sidebar for posts on that).

4) Pray and/or meditate, preferably both.

5) Have fun

6) Imagine you had it already and what that would feel like. Put yourself into that emotional state.

7) Let it go. Allow. Turn it over to the Universe/God.

Remember, you can’t rush things. But the less you resist them, the faster you’ll be able to attract them.

What happened to the health insurance reform? I thought the idea was to create a system that would provide low-cost affordable health insurance for individuals and families alike.

Yes, I thought the idea was to make it more affordable, but what was I thinking?

I guess I was way too optimistic… So far, not only does it look like it will take several years until some of those things will actually be in place (I mean, 2014!), but some of those plans could actually turn out to be even MORE expensive than previous incarnations.

Having grown up in Germany where basically everybody had health insurance, I’m still a bit in shock about the reality of not having it. And it’s almost unimaginable to anyone in Germany that anyone really could have no health insurance.

Even here in the U.S., it’s generally taken for granted that everyone has insurance “Talk to YOUR doctor” — what about those who don’t have a doctor to talk to, or can’t afford the steep charges for visiting a doctor’s office? It only adds insult to injury.

Ironically, it’s not at all uncommon — there are plenty of people without health insurance. I remember being shocked when I discovered that one of my alternative health care providers didn’t have health insurance.

And if you look at the cost of most insurance plans, it quickly becomes clear why that would be. Some of them make a mortgage payment look like small change in comparison.

Not only that, but there are still all sorts of co-payments and plenty of stuff that isn’t even covered.

When I came down with the swine flu last fall, I spent days trying to find a doctor who might fit my budget and who would prescribe one of those antiviral drugs before time ran out.

No luck. Short of going to the emergency room, which I didn’t think was the best plan, or risking a bill of hundreds of dollars by going to one of those 24hour medical offices who refused to give me a price quote, there was no way I could find anyone in time.

Just seeing my former regular doctor was more than $140, not counting medication, and since I hadn’t been there for a “while” they would insist on doing all sorts of blood work etc., and that would have added considerably to the bill.

But I had an AmeriPlan card, so I figured I’d be able to find a doctor for a reasonable charge. NOT.

After calling half a dozen doctors from their list — I discovered that some were no longer accepting that plan, and the others would have made me wait several weeks for the earliest appointment. What the heck?!

Finally, the window of opportunity to get the anti-virals passed, and fortunately, eventually, I got better all by myself, after taking hefty doses of assorted natural immune-strengthening supplements, and sleeping a whole lot. But it sure was scary.

Meanwhile, I’ve been counting on President Obama to come up with low cost health insurance plans for individuals and families, but, well, I guess it’s time for Plan B.

I’m going to do a new teleseminar series — on increasing prosperity.

The first one will be TONIGHT, Thursday, July 8.

It’s going to be on increasing prosperity by way of affiliate marketing, and I”ll give you a run-down on how to go about it effectively and will also givve you a few tips for getting traffic to your offers.

Maybe I should have done a few on mindset first, but hey, I’m starting with practical information, and I’ll also tell you about my affiliate marketing promo packages.

And yes, there will be a special offer — but there will also be plenty of meat — and I’ll actually share with you what I’m doing so you can do it for yourself if you prefer…

When?

Today, Thursday, 9 pm EST

Where?

You’ll find out if you sign up for it here:

http://www.webstufftonight.com

I have another domain (no site there yet, but I’ll set it up shortly), and that’s selfhelpstufftonight.com. That’s where I’ll be offering the teleseminars with more traditional self-help topics.

Two years ago (more than two years actually), I decided to move information that was more focused on internet marketing to its own site. Meanwhile, that site had been pretty neglected for a while as I was off odoing other things, including stuff on blogging and small business marketing (in addition to self help stuff, of course).

But the time has come to revive my webstuff blog and in celebration of it, I’ll do my first teleseminar of this series on webstuff.

Please join me… It’ll be useful even if you have no intention of ever marketing affiliate products (though you might want to reconsider).

I’ll give you some tips that will help you with getting traffic to your own website as well, whether or not you’re selling anything on there.

Hope to see you tonight at webstuff tonight

Today’s self help blog post is going to be pretty personal…

Over the last few days, I learned a painful lesson…

Always back up everything!

I tried to go to one of my blogs — My Linguistic Leverage blog that I’m using to market a lot of my online services, and it was GONE!

Completely gone. And, as it turned out, irretrievably gone.

What the heck happened?

I’m not entirely sure. All I know is that all the files were gone from my server, and that there were no back-ups.

At first I was hoping that my trusty web host would be able to restore everything, but as it turned out, when they ran the most recent back-up, the blog was already gone, so if they had had anything before, now they didn’t.

There was ONE saving grace!

Google came to the rescue…

I went and checked the Cache of all the pages I could find and saved them all in files and as PDFs, so I can copy and paste at least some of the articles back.

It’s not all of the stuff I lost, not by a long stretch. But the most important info is still there, and I will be able to put it back over the next few days.

The lesson…

Back everything up.

And also, don’t panic. Sometimes, there are surprising solutions. I didn’t think of checking with Google until I thought, gee, at least I’d like my article marketing services page back, and my “helping you with your internet business” services page etc., and some of the key articles.

And then I remembered Cache… and thought, let’s check what’s there, and a lot of the pages were there.

Interestingly, not all of them were, but the ones I needed most I could get back.

So there’s a lesson here — back up everything, and do it regularly. I’ve been very negligent on that count, and I will do a lot better now.

I’ll back things up now on TWO external hard drives as well. And I’m looking into back up solutions that are in cyberspace.

Also, it’s key to stay calm when stuff like that happens…

If I hadn’t, I might have missed the cache window, and it would have been really all gone. And that would have made this an even more painful lesso. As it turned out, it was more of a wake-up call.

It’s time for this self help blog blogger to address my thoughts about my recent health scare: The limits of self help!

What do I mean by that?

As you know if you’ve been following my writing, I’m a big fan of taking charge of my own health, emotional and physical. I grew up with a father who was basically a holistic doctor — he was a “regular” physician, but also very much up on all sorts of natural healing approaches, from herbs to Kneipp water treatments and so on. So I grew up with a lot of herbs, and am still a strong believer, and when I get sick, that’s where I go first.

Meanwhile, I also studied and was certified in Quantum Touch energy work, and have practiced that on and off for a number of years, on myself and on others.

I also do distance healings occasionally and I’m still a bit incredulous about how well it works, even halfway around the globe.

But the main beneficiary of my QT practice has been me. That’s why I started it. At the time, I was in constant pain and was seeing a chiropractor at least twice a week. I also had horrible insomnia and was using everything in the book and then some, and STILL had trouble sleeping.

But once I started using some advanced QT techniques, my back and neck pain improved to the point that my chiropractic visits dropped to once a month. My chiro still doesn’t quite believe I’m not “seeing someone else.”

And I can sleep! In fact, that was the biggest miracle that happened. There’s this special meditation that I’ve written about elsewhere on my self help blog that basically helps me go to sleep more effectively than almost anything else.

In fact, here’s what happened when I first learned it:

We were doing that meditation in the workshop, and insomniac super-fussy sleeper me fell asleep right there in the middle on the room, lying on the floor! How embarrassing — and amazing. I did the same meditation again that night, and once again I fell asleep before I was halfway done! Woohoo!

So I do QT almost every day, and overall I’m very happy with the results.

But here’s the rub…

When I noticed a huge very deep boil/cyst on my thigh, I threw some herbs at it and visualized health, and did a lot of QT. And yet it got bigger and bigger. I finally decided maybe I better go to a doctor even though I currently have no health insurance.

Of course, the question was where to go. I realized I had no time (or money) to go from one doctor to the next as they tried to figure out who was the right person for THIS particular problem… And who would be able to give me the right antibiotic.

Finally I did go see a doctor. Fortunately, I picked my friendly plastic surgeon, who had been removing a whole bunch of moles from me a few years back, and who also had proven to know exactly which antibiotics worked when I had “boil” problems in the past.

He immediately got out the anesthetic and the scalpel and cut the thing open.

And none to soon…

He told me that if i hadn’t come in when I did, I would have landed in the hospital with a septic leg — within a day or two.

That was a scary thought! I had been really sick already, with a fever, and intense fatigue. And at first I felt even worse after the surgery.

But talk about serendipity. I’m so glad I followed my gut feeling to go find a doc NOW and that I picked just the right one who got me in that very afternoon and immediately took action. I went on antibiotics (still am) and the leg is now just about healed. In the meantime, I was REALLY sick for a week and I’m still quite tired even a couple of weeks later.

So what’s the lesson? Use ALL of it. Alternative and traditional medicine. They are not an either/or proposition, but an and/and! Like it was with my dad. He gave us wick’s vaporub and herb tea, but he also gave us antibiotics when we needed them.

There’s a time and place for all of it, and it often works in tandem… So yes, self-help is good, but sometimes we need to let others help us too.

What do you think? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Sleeping while traveling… that’s something that can be a challenge.

I’m a fussy sleeper to begin with, and nowadays those planes insist on leaving at 6 a.m., which means I need to get to the airport at 4 a.m., which is earlier than I even go to bed sometimes…

So what to do?

For starters, I try to make sure that I have all my sleep paraphernalia with me, from comfy jammies to ear plugs and some herbs and aromatherapy, plus my ipod preloaded with some soothing going to sleep meditation.

Also, I like to sleep with a Euro style quilt, something that you don’t usually find at hotels, so I take one of those with me wherever I go, which usually means a second suitcase.

Of course, these days, they charge extra for even the first suitcase, and even more for the second one. But that quilt has to come along. It means the difference between sleeping pretty well or tossing and turning most of the night.

As a result I’ve learned to travel a bit lighter than I used to.

About those herbs…

Valerian is big, some Melatonin, and hops and passion flower etc. I’ve got one that’s called Relax and sleep that I like.

Generally, it’s a good idea to experiment before you travel…

Of course, you’d think after having gotten up at 3 a.m. the night before, I’d be too exhausted not to sleep, but that’s not something I can count on.

the most important thing: Bring everything you need to sleep comfortably in your carry on bag. Because you can never count on your suitcase arriving when you do. In fact, a couple of years ago, I got stranded in Chicago — without my luggage. No earplugs anywhere to be found, and no herbs either.

Lesson learned.

So what’s YOUR secret to sleeping well while in hotel beds etc.?

Insomnia can be a real pain. But finding effective ways to fix it can be a huge challenge. I’ve had problems with it for years, and during that time, I dug up a veritable encyclopedia of insomnia remedies.

Here, I’m going to share just a few of them:

First, calm your mind

If your mind is running a mile a minute, you won’t be able to sleep, no matter what. Or at least not easily. So do something that will help calm your mind.

a) Write in a gratitude journal

Yes, I mean it. Write in a gratitude journal a list of things you’re grateful for. The fact that you have a bed. That you have a whoe new day coming up. That you had a great cup of java earlier that day. That the sun came up in the morning and that you can feel confident that it will do the same the next day. And so on. You get the idea.

b) Pray, for yourself or others

Prayer is very helpful. It makes us focus on something greater outside ourselves and renews our faith in our higher power. Praying is especially effective if you pray for others. Here’s a way to do it.

You can either check with your church to see if you have a prayer team If so, you might want to join it. Then pray for the people on your list each night. If there’s no prayer team, just make your own list. Write down anyone you know who could use a prayer, along with what you want to pray for for each of them. Then pray for each and every one on that list. You probably won’t even remember your own troubles by the time you’re done.

c) Boring books

I mean REALLY boring books. I recommend certain German philosophers known for convoluted language. I’m not going to name names since that would be unkind, but I used to have a book by my bedside for sleepless nights, and it worked like a charm. Make sure that it’s a book that is not that interesting to you and that the reading of it is just absorbing enough that you can’t focus on anyt hing troublesome. it’s the intellectual equivalent to counting sheep.

Tomorrow… More insomnia remedies!

BTW, there’s a fantastic technique that might help you too: EFT. And you’re invited to download my FREE Easy Intro to EFT right here: http://www.easyeft.info

If you do, I’ll send you an update when I have my special edition tutorial on EFT for insomnia completed.
