Happy Thanksgiving! Gratitude Quotes & Thoughts

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you living in the US, and a wonderful day to everyone else! And a few thoughts about Gratitude and why it’s so important. Plus some of my favorite Gratitude Quotes.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Some people asked me during the last few days whether I celebrated Thanksgiving where I came from (Germany). And the thing is this…

Thanksgiving in the form celebrated in the US is a uniquely American thing. But giving thanks during harvest season is not.

In fact, when I grew up, there were all sorts of harvest festivals, which involved expressing gratitude for a good harvest: Erntedankfest – festival to give thanks for the harvest!

And I know they have them down under too – except they’re in spring, which is THEIR fall.

The Importance of Being Thankful

So no matter where you are, now is a good time for giving some thoughts to what you might be thankful for.

Don’t have much to be thankful for? Think again. If you can read this, you have plenty of reason to be thankful, for your eyesight, your health, your roof over your head, the food in your fridge, and the loved ones around you, or even those that might be a phone call away.

While I don’t want to think of expressing gratitude in a way that’s too utilitarian, i.e., too focused on the benefits it brings, it won’t hurt to be aware that being grateful is just plain good for you.

Not only is it good for your health, it’s good for reducing stress, and it raises your vibrations. Your brain cannot be upset and thankful at the same time, so focus on giving thanks and you feel better fast.

And feeling better in turn brings better things into your life.

Gratitude and Advanced Manifesting

In my last post, I wrote about Tara Springett’s book, Advanced Manifesting. Just scroll down to find it, or click on the “Last post” link at the beginning of this post.

Yes, she wrote quite a bit about gratitude. But she didn’t stop there. She had the ultimate of gratitude exercises…

Being grateful for the bad stuff. Or rather, the stuff you didn’t like. For when things didn’t go according to plan.

It’s a bit like Abraham-Hicks’s “positive aspects” exercise – no matter how much you dislike something or it rubs you the wrong way, find positive aspects about the situation or person or thing.

Expressing gratitude can be approached the same way: No matter how something is going against your wishes, find something about it that you can be grateful for.

Gratitude when things don’t go well…

I used to gripe a lot about how challenging my life was when I found/find myself in a financially tight spot. And yet, there’s always opportunity for gratitude.

Like one of my friends likes to say – these are growth opportunities. And I meet interesting people and come across valuable information I wouldn’t have found if things had been easier. I have learned new skills (and continue to learn new ones) and those new skills have opened up surprising opportunities.

So spend some time thinking about what good things might have come out of situations you weren’t very thankful for at the time.

And then express your gratitude.

Gratitude Quotes

Here are a few cool gratitude quotes I have come across over the last few days:

“Gratitude makes sense of our past,
brings peace for today
and creates a vision for tomorrow.”

- Melody Beattie

“The hardest arithmetic to master is that which enables us to count our blessings.”
- Eric Hoffer

“Feeling grateful or appreciative of someone or something in your life actually attracts more of the things that you appreciate and value into your life.”
- Christiane Northrup

“Appreciation can make a day, even change a life. Your willingness to put it into words is all that is necessary.”
- Margaret Cousins

“Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation.”
- Brian Tracy

“He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has.”
- Epictetus

“Go to foreign countries and you will get to know the good things one possesses at home.”
- Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

And Another Gratitude Quote…

And then, here’s probably the most important one – the reminder that we need to EXPRESS our gratitude for it to bring real benefits:

“Silent gratitude isn’t much use to anyone.”
-G.B. Stern

In keeping with Stern’s quote, be sure to tell your loved ones how much you appreciate them.

And I want to tell you how much I appreciate you for visiting me here and reading my musings.

Have a very happy Thanksgiving Day!

Gratitude – Lessons from Hurricane Irene

Sunday, August 28th, 2011

Hurricane Irene is gone, and I’m feeling gratitude for that. Still, the after-effects will be with us for a while.

Among the first one – no power!

And “no power” reflects how that makes us feel – quite disempowered. And yet, there are a lot of ways we can make do, at least for a few hours or possibly a few days. I sure hope it’ll be over soon, but I’m also looking into ways that I can get my work done if it takes longer.

In the meantime, I’d like to focus on gratitude.

First, for the storm being over, and the beautiful day today.

For the fact that it was less severe than anticipated.

Gratitude for my sturdy condo building that kept me and my neighbors safe.

And gratitude for the lessons learned from previous big storms. They made this one easier to take:

I realized that I need reliable lighting – and so after the last one I invested in a few camping lanterns, and they’re great! And, most importantly, safe!

I’m also learning to roll with the punches a bit better. So I couldn’t go online – and instead, I took some time out to rest, go to bed early, get sleep. And read some stuff I hadn’t gotten to in ages.

And as serendipity would have it, I came across a book I had had for years probably, but at the time I wasn’t ready to follow the advice inside of it. Now I had the time, and so I read it – and it offered a solution to the problem that’s been plaguing me for a while.

What’s the book? It’s at home and I’m at Starbucks typing this – something about Miracle diet by Diane Kress I believe.

I might update it later…

When I first looked at it, it seemed overly complicated. Now I’m ready to do it. So I’m on day 1 of the miracle dist, which reminds me I will have to go home to get my next round of suitable prescribed food.

More on the details later.

Another thing I’m grateful for is Starbucks (and the other places that let us use their free wireless!). The place was mobbed earlier, and even now all the outlets are taken.

And I’m here, hungry and with a sore back from hunching over a miniature table to do my typing, and afraid to leave because I’m worried I might not get another outlet when I come back. Aaargh.

And then I realize that all I have to do is bring a book (and a power strip, which the person next to me has done – my ibook is actually plugged into his power strip! That’s how HE got a place to plug in his stuff (and it includes various other gadgets he brought from home that needed to be recharged).

I’m also ecstatic about the fact that our elevator is running in spite of the power being off.

Thanks to the condo association’s decision to upgrade their generator, they now have the wherewithal to run the elevator during power outages. The thought of walking up and down 10 flights of stairs was making me depressed and tired just thinking of it, and then I discovered this morning that the elevator was actually running! Yay!

I’ve also been quite remiss with keeping up with this blog, so now I’m going to start again and share some tips on self-help and self-empowerment.

But first, another thought about Gratitude – that I have a home to go back to that may not have power right now, but it does have food in the fridge, and it’s time for a VERY late lunch.

More later.

Meanwhile, I’ll keep all those who have been harder hit by the hurricane in my prayers. And may be power be with us again soon.

Thanksgiving, Gratitude, and the Law of Attraction

Friday, November 26th, 2010

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you were able to celebrate it surrounded by your loved ones, and were enjoying the turkey, the cranberries, pumpkin pie, and, oh, the Brussels sprouts too.

And every year, about this time, I am overcome with gratitude. Gratitude for all sorts of things, big and small, and even for a few things that haven’t even happened yet, but that I anticipate — and being grateful for them in advance appears to make them arrive more quickly.

Nutty? Not really! It’s just one of those amazing Law of Attraction techniques.

Looking at the date of my last post, I realize that I haven’t been keeping up very well.

The reason — some ongoing bout with the sniffles, sore throat, fatigue, and more. I’m still very tired, but I’m getting better. And I’m grateful! Also grateful for this not turning into something worse.

And for knowing the sort of things that help make it better, or at least easier to bear, from Vick’s VapoRub, and hot soup, and even that nasal rinse with the Neti Pot.

I have to admit I don’t much care for the Neti Pot really, but I do like the results, so I use it at least some of the time.

And I’ve figured out a way to enhance it even: by adding a few drops of some mix including Oregano! Yup, the stuff that goes on pizza is also great for killing bacteria. Now you have another reason to eat pizza! Another reason for gratitude.

So how does gratitude help with the Law of Attraction?

It puts you in a higher vibration. And when you’re grateful, you can’t be angry or depressed at the same time, so it’s a great practice to write down gratitude lists, or do a verbal rampage of appreciation, or just create a litany of things you’re grateful for.

It doesn’t have to be major. Even little things work and add up. I do highly recommend writing them down though.

And one thing I’m also grateful for is that I finally have my eMoney Magic program finally ready in pre-Launch.

So if you’re interested in getting an incredible “steal” on it, click on the link:

eMoney Magic

Everyone who gets it during the Thanksgiving weekend will get a special bonus I’m creating just now — I’ll send it by email in a couple of days.

Meanwhile, treat yourself to a beautiful journal and keep it handy — and write in it every day, morning and/or night. Just make lists of things you’re grateful for. And watch your life transform!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Fourth of July! (belatedly)

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Okay, so the fireworks have come and gone, but the spirit of July 4 is still with me.

It will always be very special to me — as an immigrant I sometimes still have to pinch myself. I’m really here. I really do get to live in this amazing country!

When I came here as a graduate student, I was absolutely blown away by that sense of “can do” spirit, and the idea that achievement is something everybody was not only allowed but expected to go after.

That kind of attitude didn’t fit in quite as well where I grew up — I was supposed to be a lot more modest in my goals than I was, and stick to my place so to speak.

Here, though, it’s “Be all you can be” and it’s not just a slogan for the army but people really believe it. I love it.

So here I am, striving to be all I can be. And celebrating that I’m in a country where this is appreciated and even expected. Sure, there can be a lot of pressure at times, but the rewards are great as well.

And yes, getting that Green Card wasn’t easy. For years I wasn’t even sure I’d be able to get one. But I did, and when I drove myself across the country in a huge Hertz truck to get to my new job, I was suddenly finding myself driving past cities and towns that I had read about in my youth back in Germany. It was a major goosebumps moment when I realized that. How’d that happen!

So as I was watching the Fourth of July fireworks the other day, as I do every year, I got seriously choked up, as I do every year as well.

I hope you had a great July 4th too.

Thank you.

Gratitude for Stress Relief and Good Karma too

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

When you’re stressed, you’re probably focused on everything that’s wrong in your life. And from the Law of Attraction, we know that this is likely to attract more of the same.

And yet, there’s one thing we can do that can easily turn it all around. It will lower your stress levels like you won’t believe, and it will also attract better things into your life. It’s like attracting instant good karma.

And that magic thing is gratitude.

I’ve written about this before, though not lately. But I am inspired to write about it right now because a) I’m grateful for so many things right now, and b) one of my new Twitter friends, Daniel Brenton, is putting on this really cool gratitude watch event every week.

You can see what he’s doing right here: gratitude watch

It’s a seriously uplifting site, featuring videos and links to articles, plus, well, just go and check it out.

There are also links to two articles I wrote for ezinearticles.com a while ago…

I realize it can be hard to think of things to be grateful for especially when things don’t seem to be going your way. But try it anyway.

My favorite way to do it: I just go outside. Usually, just the sunshine and the fresh air will instantly remind me of a LOT I’m grateful for. And as I walk to my car, hey, there’s another reason. I’ve got a car. And it’s running. Plus I can walk, I can see, there’s so much I can do to change my life for the better, and it’s unbelievable how quickly I feel in a MUCH better mood, and miraculously, things start to go better as well almost instantly.

Often, I come back to my computer to find a new order or some other kind of good news. It’s almost as if the Universe had held off giving it to me until I changed to a more positive state of mind.

Try it, and let me know how it goes…

Oh, but what if it’s raining? Oh puh-leeeze! Think about how wonderful this rain is for all the plants and vegetation. And besides, we need it too — what would happen to our water supply if it stopped raining. Our earth wouldn’t function without that steady dose of water. Also remember to enjoy the clean smell of the air when the rain stops, or the fact that you can feel the rain drops on your face.

Or stay indoors and look around for things you’re grateful for. A favorite book. The fact that there’s food in your fridge. The fact that you HAVE a fridge. And so on…

In gratitude,

Elisabeth

Belated Thanksgiving Greetings! Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

I know it’s after Thanksgiving already, but to me, the whole weekend feels like Thanksgiving, and I want to take the opportunity to thank you for being here, for reading my posts, and for being part of my community.

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day, and I hope that the spirit of Thanksgiving will stay with you for days, weeks, months to come.

Last year, I wrote an article for ezinearticles.com about gratitude and how to make sure to remember what we’re grateful for, and also about keeping a gratitude journal.

You can find it here:

http://www.tinyurl.com/gratitudearticle

I hope you’ll enjoy it!

I also have a special treat for you.  More on that later tonight, but just to give you a heads up:

I’ll be holding a teleseminar tomorrow evening, at 9 p.m. EST (it won’t be too long, maybe about 45 minutes to an hour max).

About what?

About how to keep the holiday spirit going and dissolve all that holiday preparation stress.

If your to-do list is way too long, you might find it helpful.

You can even ask me questions and I’ll do my best to answer them tomorrow:

send them to “ask AT myfavoriteselfhelpstuff.com

If you ask me a question, I’ll also send you the teleseminar invitation personally!

So thank you, enjoy the article, and put Sunday evening’s teleseminar on your calendar. And check back here for more details and the number.

Have a great Thanksgiving weekend!
