Bill Burns’ Mirror Technique

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

I have learned this technique from psychic Bill Burns (and from Barbara Rose, who also learned it from Bill and explains it particularly well). It’s designed to increase a sense of self-appreciation and self-love, an essential ingredient to feeling good about oneself and to making life work well.

Here’s how it works:

Stand in front of the mirror and discuss with yourself what you did that day that pleased you. Then tell yourself what about those things pleased you and what about who you are made that possible.

I realize that this may feel awkward at first. Do it anyway.

I find it easier, and for me at least, more effective than Louise Hay’s technique of just telling yourself “I love you.”

You may want to take notes about the things you wish to discuss (see the feel-good list above) before you actually do the mirror exercise. But feel free to adlib as you come up with more things.

Here’s an example of how this might work:

I went for a walk in the park today. This pleases me because I’m taking care of myself and it made me feel good. It also helped me relax and it will contribute to keeping my body healthy and my emotions on the positive side. The quality in me that made this possible is the fact that I’m in touch with how I feel, I pay attention to it, and I take care of myself, as I must because this body is all I have, and I appreciate it and make an effort to treat it well.

Do this regularly every evening and you will notice a big shift in how you feel.

Time management guide Part 3: Bill Burns and validation vs. change incarnation

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Okay, here’s another time management article, and part three of the time management guide to various approaches to time management..

This one is on Bill Burns’ approach:

He says there are two types of people: validation incarnations and change incarnations.

The change incarnation people are those for whom the traditional time management systems work nicely. Since they’re also in the majority, that makes it seem like this is the way it should work.

This reminds me of the time when the prevailing “wisdom” insisted on making us all follow a low fat diet, which caused some of us a lot of misery and weight gain.

Now we know that many of us are designed to thrive on a LOW CARB diet, with ample protein, quite a bit of good fat, and as few carbs as possible, other than mostly veggies. And most of us do much better without eating grains too. There goes another sacred cow of nutritionists.

Time management is much the same.

Yes, it works great for Change incarnations.

It causes a lot of grief for the rest of us — the Validation incarnation people.

How so? Because validation incarnation people “function” pretty much exactly the way that’s best in alignment with Abraham Hicks’s teachings.

In fact, I’m sometimes wondering if Abraham Hicks are simply just talking to Validation incarnations, since their teachings are perfect for us. Maybe that’s because it’s really mainly validation incarnation people who are open to that kind of teaching.

And if Bill is right, change incarnations won’t need it — all they have to do is work their plan.

But for validation incarnations… things are different. If they follow their gut, and focus on doing the things that feel right, while feeling good about themselves at all times, things tend to fall into place.

Yet if they push and shove and force themselves to keep up with something they don’t really want to do, they tend to get into trouble.

Now that doesn’t mean they can be irresponsible. They still have to do the regular stuff, but overall, the emphasis is on following your bliss — just like Joseph Campbell used to say., obviously another validation incarnation.

And just as Abraham says.

And once again, Jason’s time management course is really quite compatible with that, if you need to reconcile getting stuff done and following your bliss.

Want to preview some of Jason’s stuff and get a five-part series on overcoming your bad habits? Just click here: Overcome Procrastination.

Want to know more about Bill Burns?

Just click on his name above and check out his stuff. The guy is brilliant!

And under the downloadable mp3 section, you’ll find a program on Validation and Change incarnations. I highly recommend that if you find the above at all interesting. And tell him you read about it on my blog (i.e., Elisabeth Kuhn’s blog).

Anyway, it’s time to chill, isn’t it.

Have a fantastic day.

Elisabeth Kuhn

P.S.: Want to know if you’re a validation or a change incarnation? Here’s a quick test:

1) Have some of the best things in your life come to you out of the blue?
2) Does planning often lead to disaster or get you stuck in a place you’re not happy with?
3) Did the above speak to you?
4) Do things work best for you when you feel good about yourself?

If you answered Yes to most (or all of the above), you can pretty much count on it. If you answered no, you should probably think about your answers a bit harder since most change incarnation people would have stopped reading this post long ago.

If you’d like more info, check out Bill Burns’ downloadable audio lecture on validation and change incarnations (fifth one down in the list). It’s fantastic! And no, this is not an affiliate link. Tell him I sent you if you want to give me credit for helping you find his material.

Bill Burns: My Favorite Personal Growth “Guru”

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

I don’t think I have talked much about Bill Burns on my blog. Maybe not at all. I did mention the “mirror technique,” one of the most powerful techniques he taught me, in my stress ebook though.

It’s time I started writing about him though… After all, it was Bill who really got me started on my personal growth journey.

So who is Bill Burns?: Bill is a brilliant/absolutely amazing psychic in Los Angeles/North Hollywood.

I first met him many years ago, when I was a graduate student in Berkeley. And, well, my life has never been the same.

It was him who really introduced me to a lot of the personal growth and new thought ideas that I now live by. I didn’t realize it at the time — and didn’t always understand everything he was telling me.

But now that I’m familiar with the Abraham-Hicks material, a lot of what he told me about way back makes total sense. I guess it was part of the growth process.

In the meantime, his teachings set a lot of things in motion, and had a profound influence on my personal growth.

At the time, I was really stuck, and one day, I decided to drive to church (where I hadn’t been in years) with the express intention of praying for some kind of enlightenment.

And what I got — on the car radio no less — was Bill Burns, doing a call-in psychic radio show, where he helped a few people figure out what they were really meant to do.

He was so down-to-earth and right on, I found myself glued to that radio, parked on the street in front of that church, listening to Bill. I was amazed. If I had had a cell phone back then, I would have called in right then.

Well, I called the radio station the next day, and they gave me Bill’s number in Los Angeles. And when he came back to the Bay Area, I went to his lecture.

And when he did a “spot reading” on me, he so nailed something about me that I told him during the break that I had to have a reading with him — even though I didn’t know how to pay for it.

I got the very last slot and he actually let me pay in installments because he knew I needed the information “now.” And that reading changed my life. As they say, when the student is ready…

More on that in another post.

Right now, I just want to mention what triggered this post right now…

I was listening to one of Bill Burns’ tapes in my car earlier today and it was another one of those tapes that I needed to hear right then. It was about “financial feast and famine” and how growth sometimes can create a bit of a mess in one’s life. Very reassuring. I’ll write more about that later too…

If you’re curious about Bill Burns though, you can check him out at http://www.billburns.org — this is NOT an affiliate link by the way (Last time I checked he didn’t have an affiliate program although I really think he should start one).

He’s got some great resources and even some downloadable audios. I have a whole collection of his tapes, and they’re amazing (some more so than others but they’re all good). Again, more details about that in another post.

Meanwhile, since it’s the 23rd of December, and actually Christmas eve in Europe and in New Zealand, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a GREAT Holiday season!

Elisabeth
